Endless hours of knitting culminates in ‘special’ poppy waterfall in West Row near Mildenhall for Remembrance Day
Endless hours of knitting by more than 40 people has culminated in a ‘special’ poppy waterfall that has been erected in a village near Mildenhall.
Rosalind Hamill, vice chair of West Row Parish Council, kicked off the project in January and within days of a community notice, she was inundated with offers for knitting and donations of wool.
A ‘knit and natter group’ was quickly formed and over the coming months the poppy waterfall began to take shape.
Rosalind, of West Row, said: “It has turned out unbelievably well and it really is quite special to see after all those endless hours of knitting.
“I was so surprised by the brilliant response I got earlier in the year as I was inundated with people getting back to me so it just shows what a fantastic community spirit there is here.
“We’ve had so many contribute to it. Janice, our champion knitter, went on holiday to Spain and sent pictures of her knitting and donated more than 1,000 poppies as well.
“Another lady, Wendy, was visiting family in Australia and sent images of her knitting, which was lovely to see too.
“Each and every contributor deserves a big pat on the back for their dedication and commitment to see the project completed in time for our remembrance commemorations.”
She added: “We are installing red floodlights which will make the tribute even more special.”
The initial aim was to form a waterfall, but due to so many pieces of netting and poppies, the knitted creation evolved into a ‘meandering river’.
Purple poppies were also included to recognise the animals that played their part in the First World War.
Rosalind said she was very grateful for all the help they received from West Row residents and people from the surrounding area.
The village will be honouring those who died in the line of duty with commemorations on Saturday and Monday at the West Row war memorial, with an act of remembrance on Sunday at St Peter’s Church.
