Outline plans for up to 55 homes on plot in Red Lodge, near Mildenhall, withdrawn/abandoned

Long-running plans for up to 55 homes in Red Lodge, near Mildenhall, were withdrawn this week – more than seven years after they were submitted.

Outline plans for up to 55 homes and associated access at Turners/Cooper’s Yard and Café, in Turnpike Road, were submitted in March 2017.

At that time, applicant Garnham Holdings care of Mark Cooper asked the former Forest Heath District Council – which has since merged with St Edmundsbury Borough Council to become West Suffolk Council – for outline permission to build the homes on the brownfield site, historically used for haulage storage, a café and offices.

This latest withdrawal follows plans by the same applicant for a different Red Lodge plot being withdrawn earlier this year.

A planning statement for the Turners/Cooper’s site submitted in 2017 said: “There are significant economic and social benefits to the proposals.

“In the short term, the economic benefits would include the creation of jobs in the construction industry as well as the multiplier effect in the wider economy arising from increased activity.

“The provision of housing would also help to meet the needs of businesses within Red Lodge and the surrounding area.”

There were a few resident objections submitted against the proposals, alongside some community support. However, there has been little correspondence on the application since April 2019.

This week, the plans were formally withdrawn/abandoned.
