Mildenhall councillor Andy Neal criticises timing of decision to close St Andrew’s Street in town for maintenance works ahead of new B&M store opening

A district councillor has criticised the timing of a decision to close a key road in a Suffolk town for maintenance works.

According to the one.network website, St Andrew’s Street in Mildenhall, will remain closed until Monday at 4pm for footway reconstruction works.

The closure comes ahead of a new B&M store opening along the street at the former Wilko on Saturday.

West Suffolk councillor Andy Neal, who represents the Queensway ward in Mildenhall, is not happy with the timing and said businesses in the area should have been notified of the closure.

“The lack of thought in not notifying residents and businesses in St Andrew’s Street of the road closure is inexcusable,” he said.

“Those businesses needed forewarning so they could inform their customers and while I fully understand the need for repairs to be completed, the timing is atrocious.

“B&M are moving in with all their deliveries, tradesmen and more, so the timing of this could not have been worse.

“The length of the closure seems rather excessive to me so I will be interested to see how many of those days are actually days of working activity.”

Suffolk County Council has been approached for comment.
