Mildenhall to transform into open-air gallery showcasing artwork celebrating 90th anniversary of The Great Air Race to Melbourne
A Suffolk town is set to transform into an open-air gallery showcasing an array of artwork celebrating the 90th anniversary of a historic air race.
The 'Look Up to the Skies' art trail will invite residents and visitors to embark on a journey of creativity, history, and discovery in Mildenhall from October 16 to November 2.
The trail features 50 works of art, created by residents during a project earlier this year involving The National Gallery, MarketPlace and Mildenhall Museum, which honoured The Great Air Race from RAF Mildenhall to Melbourne, Australia, in 1934.
There will be an official community trail launch event on October 19 from 11am to 2pm at the Mildenhall Hub in Sheldrick Way, where goodies will be handed out to walkers who complete the trail.
The trail will feature works at five key sites through the heart of Mildenhall, showcasing the town's cultural and historical significance along the way.
Visitors will encounter a wide range of artworks, including collage, painting and Van Gogh inspired pieces.
Maddie Exton, creative producer for West Suffolk says: “The art trail offers an opportunity for visitors to uncover Mildenhall’s rich history while seeing familiar Mildenhall landmarks in a new light and immersing themselves in community-created art.
“We eagerly anticipate seeing people explore the town's streets, uncover hidden historical gems, and forge new appreciation for Mildenhall's artistic spirit and aviation legacy.
Trail maps will be available at various locations in Mildenhall including The Hub, The Queen’s Arms, Mildenhall Museum and Sainsburys.
