Laurel Cottage in Hascott Hill, Battisford, near Needham Market, set to be rebuilt

A house destroyed in a massive fire is set to be rebuilt.

The grade-two listed thatched cottage in Battisford, near Needham Market, was engulfed in flames on January 21, 2022.

The owner of Laurel Cottage in Hascott Hill has submitted an application to rebuild, which was validated on Monday – having been granted permission to demolish the building’s remains last August.

Representatives of the owner explain in the planning statement: “Where possible, material will match the original house.”

A total of 23 Fire and Rescue vehicles attended after the fire spread across the cottage’s roof last year. One eyewitness said billowing smoke could be seen from a mile away.

The new house would have oak-framed windows, timber cladding and clay tiles.
