Republic of Munchery said: "The presence of salmonella in the products listed above. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals.

"The products could therefore carry a potential risk, because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the product, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals."

Other companies have recalled products due to the bacteria, which can cause fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps last month.

The Food Standards Agency was also approached for comment regarding a possible contamination of hypo-allergenic baby formula, but this publication was referred back to the manufacturer.

The manufacturer said salmonella was not found in the product and they were recalled as a precaution.

It can cause particular issues with the elderly and children and is commonly found in poultry products such as chicken and eggs.

Salmonella is a pathogen that is prevalent in the gut of many animals such as poultry, pigs, cattle, and pets, as well as in insects and people.

Salmonella can get into soil, water and food from the faeces of animals or people. The bacteria can easily be introduced into and spread throughout food production facilities via raw ingredients, dirty packaging, equipment and workers’ hands and clothing.
