Burwell nursery which was threatened with closure earns 'good' Ofsted rating

A nursery school which was threatened with closure less than two years ago has earned a rating of ‘good’ from an Ofsted inspector who visited it last month.

The Spring Montessori, at Burwell, was in crisis after a previous owner was struck off by the government inspection agency after a number of irregularities were found in the three early years facilities she ran.

The current team, led by provider Grace Vincent, took over The Spring in January 2018 and has turned it round so that it has now been described as ‘good’ in all categories.

“Children make good progress from their starting points. They are working at a level typical for their age and gaining the key skills needed for the next stage in their development and eventual move to school,” said inspector Carly Mooney.

She said they have good opportunities to develop coordination and small-physical skills using resources such as tweezers to pick up small objects, they learn rhymes and songs and enjoy putting actions to the words and mathematical skills are actively promoted.

Children are encouraged to be independent by clearing away and washing up their crockery carefully after snack time and tidying away toys when they have finished playing. They all know and understand the nursery rules.

Staff are described as ‘patient, kind and attentive’ especially with children who need extra support, and provide a rich and varied curriculum which includes the use of outside facilities such as weekly Forest School activities in nearby fields.

“The setting is led and managed well,” said Ms Mooney. “Managers consider the well-being of staff who spend fun days out as a team and have developed strong bonds. Morale is good.”

Ms Vincent said: “Myself and my amazing staff team have worked extremely hard since taking over this nursery in January 2018 and it has been a bit of a roller coaster. But we stayed focused and committed to providing the best quality childcare we could for our supportive parents and their children.”
