A road closure at a busy junction used daily by hundreds of motorists is set to remain in place until the end of the month.

Work on the junction of the A142 and the road leading into Exning via Windmill Hill and onwards to Burwell and the Swaffhams via the B1103 was started on March 4 and was scheduled to last for eight weeks.

Now, Ipswich-based contractors Brooks & Wood have said that the work will not be completed until May 31.

"We have encountered trouble involving the services of BT, Virgin and UK Power Network which has delayed the work", said a spokesman for the company.

When it is completed, there will be two separate lanes for motorists turning on to the A142 so that drivers turning left do not get held up behind queues of vehicles waiting to turn right across the main road.

Exning villagers have criticised the plan as a waste of money because comparatively few drivers turn left at the junction when there is an alternative route from the village to the A142 via Cotton End Road. They say a roundabout is needed to prevent congestion at the Windmill Hill junction.
