Pancake and Waffle Shack at Barton Mills suffers damage to fence after suspected arson attack

A pancake restaurant in Barton Mills had a lucky escape last night after firefighters were called to a suspected arson attack behind the property.

Two crews from Newmarket and Mildenhall were called to the Pancake and Waffle Shack at the Fiveways Roundabout near Mildenhall just before midnight last night.

They found that a skip had been set alight, with the fire having spread to the restaurant's fence.

The fire was put out in half an hour and was prevented from spreading to the building.

A statement on the Pancake and Waffle Shack's Facebook page said the owners were 'devastated' by the incident.

"After weeks of hard work and literally thousands of pounds spent whilst not trading, getting the shack ready for reopening, some low life scum decided to set fire to all the new fencing attached to the shack," it said.

"What an absolutely senseless act of human life and vandalism."

It added that the tenant living upstairs alerted emergency services and escaped 'unhurt but very shaken'.

Suffolk Police has been approached for comment.
