Former Newmarket mayor says it would be a 'travesty' if West Suffolk Council became a borough

A former Newmarket mayor said it would be a “travesty” if the newly created West Suffolk Council authority became a borough.

Cllr Andy Drummond, who is also a district councillor, told a meeting of the town council on Tuesday that having a mayor for West Suffolk could cost taxpayers up to £800,000 over the four-year life of the authority and that he believed the new council should remain a district authority with a chairman.

And he urged residents to have their say as part of an online survey on what civic leadership should look like for the new West Suffolk Council which will be set up next spring.

People are able to have their say up until Sunday and can answer questions online.
