Bunny ears will be worn with pride as fund-raiser takes Girls Night Out to Cyprus.

When Janine Lawrence from Mildenhall, takes part in St Nicholas Hospice Care’s annual Girls Night Out fundraiser, she will be pulling her walking shoes on more than 2,500 miles away from the starting line in Bury St Edmunds.

The 61-year-old signed up for the charity walk on Saturday, September 10 earlier this year, but after the date clashed with a visit to see her son and his family in Cyprus, she came up with plan B.

Janine said: “I originally signed up as part of the Mildenhall Slimming World Group, but then without thinking about the dates I booked my flights to go and see my son who is in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and stationed out in Cyprus.

“I hadn’t realised when I booked my flights that I would be away for September 10, but then I thought why I should let it stop me, I can still take part, and I will just have to do it in Cyprus. So that’s what I am doing.”

While pyjama-clad women will walk scenic routes around the town, Janine’s journey will be slightly different, but she won’t be alone. Her son Richard has agreed to be an honorary girl for the day and join her on her fund-raising trek.

“Richard is busy planning the route, but we are hoping it will take us along the coast to RAF Akrotiri.

“It is about 40 degrees out there at the moment, so we are not sure what time of day we will be doing the walk, but I expect the temperature will be between 25 and 30 degrees, but I will be wearing my bunny ears and t-shirt,” said Janine.

This will be the first time Janine has taken part in the Girls Night Out fundraising event and she is already looking forward to it.

Janine added: “The hospice is such a great and worthwhile cause, it is something that helps so many people and I really can’t wait to take part, albeit in a slightly different location. I will be wearing my bunny ears proudly in Cyprus.”

Despite the heat Janine is confident she will be able to go the distance, thanks to the long walks she enjoys with her Border Collie.

“When I first told my son what I was planning to do he did say ‘mum you do realise how far 11 miles is?’ I told him I walk the dog between six and five miles every day so I think I will be okay. I also went to Crete earlier in the year and as our hotel was quite far from the centre we worked out that we must have been walking around 17km each day.”

The charity walk sees fund-raisers take on a six-mile or 11.2-mile course, with people encouraged to sign up as teams with colleagues and friends.
