Newmarket youngsters plan a surprise thank you for NHS workers

Two Newmarket youngsters who plan to hand surprise gifts to NHS staff when the coronavirus crisis ends are appealing for donations.

Twelve -year-old Ella Fisher and her brother Cameron, 10, who live in King Edward Road with parents Emma and Scott wanted to say thank you to people who have worked round the clock to treat those affected by the disease.

The idea began with Ella’s wish to ‘do something’ to help and as a result personal safety items were given to a nurse from stock at Scott’s water-testing company H20 Scientific.

“Ella felt we could do more and she had the idea of filling shoeboxes with special treats and handing them out at hospitals. Then Cameron came up with the idea of re-usable tote bags,” said Emma.

A page for donations at gofundme.com/f/surprise-nhs-shoeboxes has reached £600, including a £250 gift from local firm Smarter Metering.

Other companies have given luxury items, including chocolate and soaps and Ella and Cameron plan to ask local supermarkets for donations to help fill 100 bags.

“We want to hand them out initially at Addenbrooke’s Hospital to front-line staff and others who have worked throughout the crisis,” said Emma.
