Two dogs, a rabbit and a guinea pig were voted winners in a Pet of the Year 2017 competition organised by a Newmarket veterinary practice.

Vets4Pets opened its premises above the Pets At Home store on the town’s Studlands Retail Park last September.

Owners whose pets have been treated at the surgery were invited to enter them in either the class for cats and dogs or the Exotic class which covers all other pets.

The whole team at Vets4Pets picked their favourites and voted for them in a poll.

When the winners were announced on Monday, the top dog was Summer, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel belonging to Nicola Richards of Newmarket.

Runner-up in the class was another dog, Sadie an 11-year-old cross breed who lives in Cheveley with owner Priscilla Astley.

Top spot among the exotics went to Milo, a four-year-old guinea pig owned by Heidi Clover, from Meldreth, with Peter, a white rabbit belonging to Danny Gooderham, from Bury St Edmunds, taking second place.

They all won certificates and pet goody bags presented by the practice owner Dr Ian Cope MRCVS.
