Soham playgroup's 'role model' staff praised in Ofsted report

Staff at a Soham playgroup have been praised as excellent role models for the children in their care by an Ofsted inspector who gave the group an overall rating of ‘good’.

Inspector Jacqui Oliver said the personal development, behaviour and welfare of youngsters at Soham Playgroup’s Windmills Under-Fives was ‘outstanding’ thanks to the manager and staff who, she said, ‘have formed exceptionally close relationships with children and treat them with kindness and respect’.

The report said children were provided with high-quality care and learning opportunities and particularly benefited from access to a superb outdoor area where they enjoyed fresh air and exercise.

“The playgroup garden is full of exciting ideas and interesting places where children can freely explore. It has been imaginatively developed to include all areas of learning,” said Ms Oliver.

She said the group’s committee and manager were dedicated to its ongoing development and had a clear vision for the future.

Staff at the playgroup, which caters for two to four year olds and has been running for nearly 20 years, were encouraged to attend training to strengthen their skills which were reflected in outcomes for children’s future learning when they went on to primary school as confident, independent learners who listened attentively to stories, knew how to sit in a small group and followed instructions.

Ms Oliver said that to improve further, the playgroup should enhance the strategies which were already in place to support parents to complement and extend their children’s learning at home.
