Soham's Eastern Gateway will take until 2035 to build
Development of a 65-acre Soham estate could take up to 15 years to complete.
At a public exhibition of initial plans, Cambridgeshire County Council’s developer, This Land Ltd, said it could be as late as 2035 before as many as 570 new homes were built on land between East Fen and Qua Fen Common.
The company said it would be submitting a planning application this autumn, with the aim of starting construction in early 2020.
Included in the plan will be a new roundabout on the A142, for which the government has given £6.3 million towards the cost of construction.
But this will be the only vehicular access to the site, with no direct link to the town centre after a Pratt Street option was ruled out by the county council.
An alternative access route, via Brewhouse Lane, is dependant on the medical centre moving into the estate.
Fears development would encroach on to nearby allotments have not been realised, and the land will continue to be used for gardening.
District planners have identified enough land in Soham to build 2,100 new properties by 2031.
