Woman's despair after her wall in Chippenham is hit for the 15th time

A wall outside a house in Chippenham has been demolished yet again after it was hit by a car for the 15th time.

Victoria Coldrey was left to pick up the rubble of the listed brick and flint wall at her Park Farm House, at Park Farm Corner, after a driver lost control of a Golf TDI car in the early hours of Sunday.

Repairs had only been completed two weeks ago after the last accident in January which was the fourth time the wall had been hit in 18 months and Mrs Coldrey is furious that her appeals to Cambridgeshire County Council’s highways department to put in measures to make the bend near her home safer, have, so far fallen on deaf ears.

“It really is getting ridiculous,” said Mrs Coldrey, who was having to contact her insurers yet again. “The wall was hit in the same place but more of it has been taken out this time. When these crashes happen bricks fly all over the place coming through the hedge and hitting the house.

“One day either me or my dog is going to get killed.”

She has been campaigning for years to make the road safer. “Drivers just go too fast,” said Mrs Coldrey. “I have had all sorts through here over the years.”

She has been pressing for speed mitigation measures including bigger chevron warning signs on the verge and ‘slow’ to be written on the road warning drivers of the bend.

“The current signs are not far enough away and some drivers are still going up to 50mph when they get here,” said Mrs Coldrey, who has petitioned Chippenham Parish Council, the police and police and crime commissioner and her MP Lucy Frazer to help.

Because the wall is listed repairs have to be done by a specialist using lime mortar which takes up to two weeks to dry. “The repairs are expensive,” said Mrs Coldrey and Dick Bourne who did the last repair couldn’t believe it when I told him it had been hit yet again.”

A spokesman for the county council said: “We are aware of the issues at Park Farm corner in Chippenham and are working closely with the residents, parish council and police to identify suitable measures that can be put in place.”
