Derby winner Masar retired to stud
Charlie Appleby's Epsom Derby winner Masar has been retired to stud with immediate effect.
The son of New Approach provided his trainer and owners Godolphin with their first – and only – victory in Flat racing's most famous race last year.
However, injury meant that was his last appearance as a three-year-old and he has struggled to recapture any form in 2019, finishing fifth in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot before coming last of six in the Princess of Wales's Stakes during last week's July Festival at Newmarket.
Moulton Paddocks-based Appleby remained bullish about Masar's capabilities after his most recent disappointment, stating: "He looks well, he’s working well and it's just the way it panned out. He’s still got plenty of gas in him. We'll just have to try and get him back on track."
But following discussions with Godolphin supremo Sheikh Mohammed, the decision has been taken the send the four-time winner to stud.
