Junior Newmarket Jogger Cerys Bithell makes big impression at the Anglian Schools Cross Country Championships
Junior Newmarket Jogger Cerys Bithell helped Suffolk Schools to clinch the Under-13 Girls Team Trophy at the Anglian Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Competing against the best runners in her age group from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Bithell finish fifth out of 70 in the 2,050-metre race.
It was a performance that contributed to Suffolk pipping their Northamptonshire counterparts to the top prize, which was based on the positions of the top six finishers for each county.
Unfortunately for the youngster, under-13s are not permitted to compete at next month’s National Championships in Liverpool, but she is hopeful of representing the Suffolk Junior team next year, when she can then compete at the Nationals.
On the same day at the Suffolk Running Centre in Barrow, three members of the Newmarket Joggers ran in the Windmill Half Marathon.
This was a scenic circular road route passing through Higham, Gazeley, Ashley, Dalham and Denham.
Alan Shand was 4th of 25 runners overall in 2:03:51. Then came Angela Brennan in 2:29:50 and Gillian Green in 2:50:26.
On Sunday, it was the Great Bentley Half Marathon in Essex, where Mark Hayward put in a great run to clock 1:17:18, finishing 22nd of 692 runners overall and 14th of 129 in the U40 age group.
Also putting in a fine effort for the Joggers was Melanie Tindale in a time of 1:56:48, which put her 21st of 287 female runners overall and 27th of 64 in FV40.
This was a top profile race with GB runner Helen Davies from Ipswich first female home in 1:13:32.
