Wycombe Wanderers finalise deal to sign Newmarket Town youngster Ryan Cole

Newmarket Town youngster Ryan Cole has completed a dream move to the professional ranks with Wycombe Wanderers.

The left-footed midfielder joined the Jockeys’ youth system at the age of six and made his way through the age groups, which included playing colts, Eastern Junior Alliance and Under-18s football.

Cole went on to make his senior debut at the age of 16 and quickly became a regular in Michael Shinn’s side, racking up a total of 110 appearances and scoring 21 goals. Cole was a key part of the team that earned promotion via the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division play-offs last term and he has continued to produce the goods at a higher level this season with seven goals.

His potential has alerted a number higher-league clubs in recent campaigns, and it was in October that League One high-flyers Wycombe handed him a trial.

And having impressed manager Matt Bloomfield and his coaching staff, Cole has now sealed a switch to Adams Park.

A Newmarket statement read: “Ryan’s ability to take players on, create attacking play and score goals soon got recognised, which led to every grassroots team’s biggest fear – scouts, and opportunities to play at a higher level.

“To Ryan’s credit he wanted to remain and develop with the Jockeys, but when an opportunity came along to play and train with a professional club, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

“Although we will miss Ryan, we are extremely proud of his achievements and look forward to seeing him develop and progress in the same way he progressed at Newmarket Town FC.”

After a bright first half of the season, Wycombe are third in the League One standings, two points adrift of table-topping Birmingham City.
