Newmarket trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam delighted after Mill Stream comes out on top in July Cup
The hot favourites were left in the shade as the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Mill Stream claimed victory during Saturday’s Group 1 My Pension Expert July Cup.
The July Course’s top level sprinting contest had been billed as a likely battle for supremacy between Inisherin and Vandeek.
However, it was Chapple-Hyam’s Gleneagles colt that came out on top, finishing three-quarters-of-a-length clear of runner-up Swingalong.
Chapple-Hyam, who is the first HQ-based handler to win the July Cup since David Simcock in 2011, said: “It was hard to take third at Ascot (in June) but to come on and win at my local track is important – I am thrilled.
“Today is ours. This is my home track and my favourite track so it’s good. His owner Peter Harris knows the game and I’m a very lucky lady to have him as an owner. He believes in this horse.”
It was also a landmark victory for William Buick, who chalked up his 100th Group/Grade 1 win.
The Norway-born jockey, who rode four winners on the day, added: “We felt he had a bit more to give and Jane and the team convinced me he was a much better horse today – he duly was.
“That bit of rain really suited him and I was always so comfortable. He is really genuine and puts his head out. It was well deserved. This is my first July Cup and I’m absolutely thrilled.”
