Newmarket councillors give green light for cricket to return to The Severals

Cricket is set to be played in Newmarket again this summer after the town council voted in favour of its return.

An initial proposal – spearheaded by recent district council candidate Frank Stennett – was made last summer to restore the sport to the purpose-built facility on The Severals for the first time since 2017, but that was rebuffed.

However, a second attempt was launched on Monday and on this occasion it was given the green light by town councillors.

With the new cricket season just around the corner, the decision has come too late to enter a team into a league for 2020. However, there is still every intention to instal a 'cricket presence' in the town over the coming months.

Stennett said: "We welcome the decision but unfortunately we will not be able to register a league team this season.

"It is, however, important that we establish a cricket presence on The Severals and we will look to do this by potentially playing exhibition matches or creating a mini league."
