Newmarket Town sign Ely City captain Tom Williams

Despite recently hinting that his transfer business for the summer was complete, player-manager Michael Shinn has made a further addition to his Newmarket Town squad.

Joe Asensi, Matt Green and Rob Ruddy – all of whom won the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division title with neighbouring Mildenhall Town – agreed switches to the Tristel Stadium, leaving Shinn feeling 'really positive' about his recruitment work.

However, he has now swooped in to bolster his defensive options further with the signing of Ely City captain Tom Williams.

Aside from a short stint with Lakenheath, the centre-back has been a near ever present in the heart of the Robins' defence in recent seasons.

Last term he was Ely's second highest appearance maker with 39 outings, from which he showed what a threat he can be in the opposition's penalty box with five goals.

Williams' departure is another key one for Ely, who have seen Ryan Gibbs, Adam Capel and Luke Young all move on to pastures new this summer.

Newmarket, meanwhile, continue their pre-season friendly schedule this evening with the visit of a Cambridge United XI (7.45pm).
