Ely clinch team award at Links
The trio of Alfie Guy-Pinkney, Ryan Woods and Luke Ryan combined to clinch the Team Championship Shield at this year’s County Championships, held earlier this month at The Links in Newmarket.
Guy-Pinkney, aged just 15, actually held the overall at one point in proceedings, with his nett score of 138 at the end of day one enough to secure him the January Cup.
The teenager eventually finished in eighth position, while a final-round 74 saw club-mate Woods end up in third place.
Meanwhile, Ely’s scratch team skipper Luke Ryan came home in 16th to help wrap up the team prize for the Cambridgeshire club.
David Marris was the home club’s top-performing player, going round in 295 shots to finish one adrift of Woods in fourth.
Another Links player – Tareq Moubarak – was ninth, with club secretary and former club champion Matt Hartley continuing his recent upturn in form after injury and illness by placing 11th.
It was St Neots Golf Club that boasted the winner, though, with Ben Welch finishing three shots clear of 2017 champion Ed Dimambro of Gog Magog.
Welch did particularly well at the start of day two, opening up with a run of an eagle and three birdies to put him pole position.
