Soham Town Rangers have started preparations for life back at Step 5 by reaching an agreement for the return of Jordan Gent.

The Greens will be playing in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division next season for the first time in 14 years following their recent relegation from the Pitching In Northern League Midlands Division.

But despite that disappointment, the mood has been lifted at Julius Martin Lane by the reunion with Gent.

The 30-year-old former captain left Soham in November 2016 for Cambridge City and aside from a brief stint with Biggleswade Town, he has been a key part of the Lilywhites’ backline ever since.

However, he has now decided to rejoin Soham as joint bosses Lloyd Groves and Matt Clements begin work on putting together a competitive squad.

Meanwhile, the managers will likely be keen to keep hold of Ollie Ward after he won two of the club's end-of-season awards.

The striker joined Soham from lower-league outfit Witchford 96 last summer and acquitted himself well to earn the Players' Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer prizes. As for the Managers' award, that went to goalkeeper Finley Iron.

Ward will also come up against his former club Witchford when Soham get their pre-season friendly schedule under way on July 2.

That is followed by Godmanchester Rovers (July 9, H), Yaxley (July 16, A), Haverhill Borough (July 19, H), Saffron Walden Town (July 23, H), Eynesbury Rovers (July 26, A).
