Stradivarius streaks away to win third Gold Cup at Royal Ascot
Stradivarius underlined his status as one of the modern era's greatest stayers by securing a hat-trick of Gold Cups at Royal Ascot this afternoon.
It was an impressive display from the John Gosden-trained six-year-old, who is only the third horse to have won the Group 1 showpiece on more than two occasions.
Nayef Road – trained by Mark Johnston – led for much of the two-and-a-half-mile contest, but he had no response when Frankie Dettori asked Stradivarius to turn on the taps down the home straight.
The winning margin was around 10 lengths, with Charlie Appleby's Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter completing the top three.
"It is an amazing achievement. This was always the plan to come here," said the triumphant Dettori.
"The rain this morning was against him because you know that he's got a tremendous turn of foot.
"I was actually surprised at the four-furlong marker when I looked over my shoulder and everyone was in trouble – it was matter of getting balanced. He just took off. Even without a crowd, I am just very proud of the horse."
