Newmarket Rugby Club eyeing up a positive start to their Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield campaign
Head coach Martyn Wall has challenged his Newmarket Rugby Club players to get their Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield campaign off to a positive start when they travel to North Walsham II on Saturday (2pm).
With eight of the top sides from the first phase of the season coming together, the Scaltback side have a tough task ahead of them to achieve their target of promotion to London 3 Eastern Counties.
However, having carried five points across with them from those opening few months, victory at the weekend in Norfolk would hold Wall’s men in good stead.
“We have done our research on the sides we will be facing and they are going to be very similar to us,” he said.
“We know North Walsham are beatable if our performance and attitude is right. They are a strong club across the board and it looks like they have a mean defence – so do we.
“The ultimate aim at the end of this is promotion and so we are going to need to make a strong start.
“It is very much game by game, but the momentum is with us and we need to capitalise on that on Saturday.”
Team selection is likely to be an issue for Wall and the coaching staff, albeit for positive reasons.
He should have a fully fit squad to select from, meaning that he will have to pass on bad news to some of the squad.
“Our numbers have increased over the last couple of years and that makes selection very hard,” added Wall.
“It is tough to leave people out because a lot of the players deserve to be in the starting line-up, but at the same time it is a positive to have so many good options.”
