Soham Town Rangers’ new manager Brett Whaley calls for patience as he works to turn the club around
New manager Brett Whaley has called for patience as he bids to restore Soham Town Rangers as a competitive Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division club.
It has been a tough couple of seasons for the Greens, who after being relegated from Step 4 at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, finished down in 15th last term.
The appointment of Whaley, who replaced Lloyd Groves earlier this summer, has ushered in a new era at Julius Martin Lane.
And while the former Wisbech Town and Spalding United boss is confident that he will be able to turn things around, it is not something that is going to happen instantly.
He said: “The big thing we need to do is turn the momentum around, which can sometimes be one of the hardest things to do in football.
“Just like winning becomes a habit, so does losing. I know for the supporters to have a team that hasn’t won many games in the last couple of seasons, that is tough. It’s a credit to them that they kept coming back week after week. They want a winning team and so do we. There are two ways of doing it, one of which is throwing money at it but that is not something we’ll be doing.
“The other way – and this is what we’ll be doing – is starting again. People might think it’s all about the players you sign, but it’s just as much about the work you do on the training ground.
“The fans want to win, the club wants to win and so do we. We’ll be doing everything we can to deliver it, but it’s going to take a little bit of time.
“We’ll be splitting the season into three. The first part is the rebuild, the second is going to need a bit of patience but then by Christmas hopefully we’ll start to see the performances and patterns of play that we’re after.
“It’s a great club and a big club in the league. I’m looking forward to being a part of getting them back to where they should be.”
Soham begin life under Whaley’s management away at Harleston Town, who finished third last season, on Saturday (3pm). And that is followed on Tuesday by the visit of newly-promoted Downham Town (7.45pm).
