On three of those previous attempts, the David Simcock-trained seven-year-old was beaten by under a length.

But he came good at the seventh time of asking for the Trillium Place Stables trainer, beating off competition from fellow Newmarket horses Expert Eye (Sir Michael Stoute) and the favourite Without Parole (John Gosden).

Under jockey Oisin Murphy, Lightning Spear waited for the gap to appear and made his decisive move inside the final furlong.

The son of Pivotal holds an entry for the Group 2 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile Stakes later this month.
