Newmarket Town lose leading goalscorer Josh Lee to fellow North Division side Maldon & Tiptree
Newmarket Town have been dealt a blow with the departure of their leading goalscorer Josh Lee.
The forward, who has found the back of the net on nine occasions this term, has switched to fellow Pitching In Isthmian League North Division side Maldon & Tiptree.
Lee joined Newmarket from neighbouring Mildenhall Town in the summer of 2023 and he went on to play a leading role in the club’s historic promotion to Step 4. The former Haverhill Rovers frontman scored a total of 20 goals in all competitions as Newmarket went up via the play-offs.
And the goals have continued to flow at a higher level, but after recently taking on a new job in London, Lee has now opted to move on.
Newmarket manager Michael Shinn said: “Josh works in London now and is looking to move that way so it makes sense for him, but obviously we’re disappointed.
“He’s been great for us since we signed him and he’s become a real handful.”
Lee, who made his final appearance for Shinn’s men during Tuesday’s 4-2 home win over Cambridge City, scored against his new side when Newmarket won 1-0 at Maldon in September.
He is the second player to have left Newmarket today following confirmation that Jose Santa de la Paz had sealed a move to Ipswich Wanderers.
Newmarket will begin life without Lee and De La Paz tomorrow away at Walthamstow (3pm).
