Kate McGreavy ‘over the moon’ after Bloomsbury Futsal Club beat Bolton Futsal Club in National Futsal Series WSS Grand Final at National Cycling Centre in Manchester

Newmarket’s Kate McGreavy has been celebrating winning the National Futsal Series WSS Grand Final alongside her Bloomsbury Futsal team-mates at the weekend.

In what was a nerve-shredding affair against Bolton Futsal Club at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, London-based Bloomsbury came out on top 3-0 in a penalty shootout after the two sides had played out a 3-3 draw.

“It was tense,” said McGreavy, who is a former St Louis Catholic Academy (Newmarket) and St Benedict's Catholic School (Bury St Edmunds) pupil. “We missed so many chances in the second half and during extra-time that I did wonder whether it was not going to be our day.

“I’m over the moon because at the start of the season there was some changes with players coming in and others leaving. We knew we had a talented group but you never know how long things will take to gel.

“Our aim was to get into the play-offs and see where that took us – and thankfully we managed to come out on top.”

And while it may have been too close for comfort for those involved, for the neutrals watching on it will have been a thoroughly entertaining afternoon.

“That’s the main thing,” added McGreavy. “The quality of the game was really high.

“There was lots of fans and kids watching on and they will have seen an end-to-end game with lots of exciting, tactical elements.

“People who have been around the game for a long time that were there on the day said it was one of the best women’s finals they’d ever seen, so hopefully it gets some more people interested in the game.

“You could feel the quality of the game while you were playing in it. The two teams definitely got the best out of each other.”

Bloomsbury and Bolton could meet again this weekend with more silverware on the line. Having pipped their northern counterparts in the league and in the Grand Final already this season, they will lock horns again in the League Cup should they both come through Saturday’s semi-finals.

McGreavy and her team-mates will have to overcome London rivals Helvecia, while Bolton take on Birmingham.

All matches are scheduled to take place at Hartpury University.
