Newmarket golfer Tyler Weaver to compete alongside likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau at U.S. Open
Newmarket’s Tyler Weaver is preparing to rub shoulders with the great and the good of the golfing world after he made history by becoming the first player from Suffolk to secure a spot at the U.S. Open.
The 22-year-old, who is currently based at Florida State University, will compete alongside the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau at the third Major of the year on June 12-15 at the famed Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The lifelong Links Golf Club member earned his place among such prestigious company thanks to a stellar performance during Golf’s Longest Day, finishing 11-under par across 36 holes at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta.
His rounds of 67 and 66, including four straight birdies in the second round, secured a tie for third and one of five available qualifying spots.
And it is the source of great pride for The Links, where Weaver started his golfing journey as a junior. His father – former jockey Jason – and brother Max remain active members at the club.
“This is a landmark moment – not just for Tyler, but for golf in Suffolk,” said Matt Hartley, manager at the Cambridge Road-based club.
“To see someone who grew up here reach the U.S. Open is something truly special. He’s proving to our younger players that anything is possible.”
To mark the occasion, The Links will host a watch party at the clubhouse, where Weaver spent many hours in his youth, to celebrate his first tee shot in a Major championship.
And his success is already inspiring the next generation of golfers back home. Since the start of 2025, Newmarket Links has seen a notable increase in junior membership.
“Tyler’s story has lit a spark,” said Naomi Pilmer, junior development lead at the club. “There’s a real excitement around the game, kids are showing up early, asking questions, wanting to train harder. That kind of energy is what every grassroots programme hopes for.”
Currently ranked 27th in the World Amateur Golf rankings, Weaver has enjoyed a standout season at Florida State, with six top-10 finishes, a victory at the 2025 Cabo Collegiate and a runner-up finish at the ACC Championship. He was also recently named a PING All-America Honorable Mention.
Before heading to Oakmont, Weaver will represent Team International at the Arnold Palmer Cup, which starts today at the Congaree Golf Club.
