Links Golf Club's Tyler Weaver crowned England Midland Boys Under-16 champion in Derbyshire

Links Golf Club junior member Tyler Weaver is the England Midland Boys Under-16 champion after shooting a 54-hole total of 1-over-par at Kedleston Park last week.

In a tightly-fought contest, the youngster emerged victorious by a single stroke against a strong international field in the Faldo Series event at the tough Derbyshire layout.

Weaver, son of former jockey and TV pundit Jason, ended the first day in 12th place with a 4-over-par 76, six shots off the lead set by William McGhie.

However, showing true competitive spirit, he followed a 2-over-par front nine on the second day with a back nine of 4-under to post the second best score of the day.

Now in fourth place, but still five shots behind the leader, Weaver ground out a final round of 71, taking the lead for the first time on the 53rd hole.

“This was a really well run competition against I lot of players I’ve competed against before, so I knew that scoring was going to be good,” he said.

“I didn’t get off to a very good start which was really disappointing. On the second day I knew I had to attack and to shoot 4-under on the back nine felt great. Playing in one of the last groups in that final round was really exciting.

“With three holes to go I could see from the scoreboard that I was tied for the lead.

“I birdied 17 to go ahead and after putting my second shot on the green at 18 I just made sure I two putted to win.

“I’d really like to say a big thank you to Lawrence Dodd, my coach at Culford school, who has helped me a lot with my game over the last year and a half.”
