Providing his new-look Lakenheath side can gel together, manager Ben Cowling is hopeful they will be challenging the top end of the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North this season.

Despite finishing down in eighth position in the Kershaw League Premier Division last term, Lakenheath are preparing for their first ever campaign at Step 6, having accepted the invitation to be promoted as part of a non-league restructure.

Former Haverhill Rovers and Haverhill Borough boss Cowling filled the hotseat at The Pit towards the end of the previous term, and has since been highly active in terms of recruitment.

The likes of Kelvin Enaro, Matt Hayden, Sam Hawley and Ryan Sanders have all signed on the dotted line this summer, providing the squad with plenty of Thurlow Nunn League experience.

And if they hit it off on the pitch, Cowling believes a positive campaign could be in store.

“With regards to targets, it depends on how quickly we settle as a squad.” he said.

“There are lots of players who have never played together before a couple of weeks ago and we have not had a settled team throughout pre-season, especially in central defence due to holidays and injury.

“The quality of players we have, we want to win things and challenge at the top end of the table.

“This is not the same squad that came eighth in the Kershaw Premier last year.

“That said, we have to earn the right. The signs are promising but there are some very good squads in the division.”

Lakenheath kick things off on Saturday away at Debenham LC, who finished seventh in the First Division last season (3pm).
