Squeeze East selects his All-Time XI
In recent seasons, few people will have watched more local non-league football than Squeeze East.
Here, the man behind the platform has picked his All-Time XI from teams covered primarily by the Newmarket Journal.
GK: Josh Pope (Soham Town Rangers & Mildenhall Town)
Between him and Niall Conroy. No better shot stopper than Niall for a long time but he’ll admit his form has gone up and down between clubs.
Popey has been boringly brilliant for too long and remains one of the best in non league. Soham earn 20 points a season through Josh.
CB: Lloyd Groves (Soham Town Rangers)
The guy is an animal. You can’t get round him. Think about Steve McNulty, who got to League One with Fleetwood. Big, but brilliant.
You don’t need pace if you can defend and head things. A brilliant team player too.
CB: Jordan Lambert (Newmarket Town)
A Rolls Royce. None better round here.
CB: Adam Murray (Ely City, Newmarket Town & Mildenhall Town)
For whatever reason he never went as high as he should but he has everything you need in a defender and a frightening forward threat too.
LW: Jamie Thurlbourne (Newmarket Town & Mildenhall Town)
I watched Wolves for 10 years and only saw a handful of players even at that level who had better left foot than the chop in this guys' locker.
CM: Luke Chadwick (Soham Town Rangers)
Slowing down when he came to Soham but it was as if he was playing a different game at times. Almost had his own postcode the space he created.
CM: Erkan Okay (Soham Town Rangers)
Probably the best footballer in the Histon side that flew through the leagues and capped at England C level. Still going at Soham.
CM: Lee Smith (Bury Town)
One of the best all round midfielders you’ll see. Has everything in his locker.
That he’s only got one good knee now, took three months off in Thailand and still ran it for an all conquering Histon side last year says everything.
RW: Tom Knowles (Newmarket Town)
Technicality of course thanks to his Newmarket days but the best out and our winger we have ever seen in non-league.
Defenders had to pay to get back in after playing this guy.
CF: Craig Calver (Mildenhall Town)
This side would be a nightmare tactically but Wiggy had everything.
Only one appearance in the Football League, should have had many many more. A walking red card but couldn’t leave him out of a best XI.
CF: Sam Mulready (Soham Town Rangers)
We love a big man as much as anybody but you can’t leave this guy out.
With the whips and chops in this team, this guy would get 100 a season.
Substitutes: Never sure about subs in these sides but these guys would offer a way out of any situation. All class.
A big mate of our platform of course but his goals record speaks for itself.
Puts stuff on a plate for others too. A 100 per cent fit Rolls would kill teams.
Frustrating as he is brilliant but his feet are magic.
Sad to have to put Butch on the Judy. Immense in the double-winning team.
Something different off the bench. A nightmare for defenders to deal with.
To nick a goal late on of course.
Diagonals for days. Class act on and off the pitch.
Pace, versatility and a massive throw.
Brady Stone (and Martin Grey)
Couldn’t be anybody else.
