Player-boss Michael Shinn has overseen plenty of squad changes since he took over from Kevin Grainger in January of this year.

While some established players have moved on, Shinn has opted largely to recruit younger players.

Nevertheless, the Jockeys have made a relatively positive start to the new season, losing just once and advancing through to the preliminary round of the FA Cup.

And Avis, who has three goals to his name so far this term, is pleasantly surprised by how quickly it has come together at the Bloorie.com Stadium.

“There has been a massive change at the club,” he said.

“We have got a small squad, but everyone is tight-knit and wants to help each other out on the pitch.

“People are there for each other and everyone works hard.

“It is all positive and it has been surprising – in a good way – how quickly it is coming together.”

Avis was on target on Saturday, but his goal was not enough to earn Newmarket all three points against Brantham Athletic.

The hosting Jockeys had to settle for a 1-1 draw after George Clarke scored for the visitors.

* Newmarket have been drawn at home against lower-league Brampton in the opening round of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup.

The tie is set to be played on Tuesday, October 9.

Meanwhile, Soham Town Rangers and holders Ely City have received byes through to the second round.
