Race walker George Wilkinson continues recent form with another personal best performance

George Wilkinson’s recent run of promising results continued this week as he posted a new personal best in a 3km walk in Stevenage on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Moulton race walker, who turned 17 last week, won the open race in a time of 13 minutes and 34 seconds, beating his previous best of 13:51 set in the Woodford Green Open in September last year.

The PB comes just over a week since he won the British Athletics Junior 10km, in the Under 20 age group, in Coventry, following in the footsteps of his older brother Callum, and coach Ron Wallwork.

Callum won the same event four years ago in 2015, while Wallwork took top honours back in 1960.

George eased to victory among his fellow competitors in the Under 20 men’s category, finishing in a modest time of 49:15, more than 10 minutes ahead of his nearest rival Ryan Roberts (59:48).

The race was held in conjunction with the senior event, and Wilkinson’s time was good enough to secure third spot among the seniors, with only Tom Parlington (45:21) and Adam Cowin (49:09) eclipsing his time.

Coach Mick Graham believes more PBs will follow for the youngster, especially as he continues to compete in the shorter distance 3km and 5km walks, which he says will help him prepare for the 10km, and eventually 20km, events later down the line.

“With the 3k and 5ks, it helps build your leg speed for when you do the longer ones, like the 10ks,” he said.

“George knows he can go faster than what he did in Coventry (49:15), but I told him you don’t have to race them all and go after PBs all the time.

“What we wanted from the race was the medal, which is what he got, and I told him the PBs will come in races when he is pushed more.”

Next up for Wilkinson will be the Suffolk Championships, in Ipswich, this weekend, before the famous Moulton Open 5 follows on June 1. The England Athletics U20 Championships then take place on June 23.
