The player-boss played in the first round proper during his stint with Dartford, while he was also part of a Cambridge United squad for a second-round encounter.

And, while reaching such heights will be a difficult task for the Jockeys, Shinn is nevertheless keen for his charges to string a few wins together in football’s oldest cup competition.

“Any player that is lucky to have a good run in the FA Cup, that is what it is all about,” he said.

“I have been lucky enough to play in the first round – it is probably the highlight of my footballing life.

“Our young boys have got an opportunity to win through two, three or even four rounds and play a very big club.

“It is really difficult to progress because there are so many factors, but you never know.

“If you play well and get a bit of luck, that can take you a long way in cup competitions.

“For lads at this level it gives them the opportunity to have one day as a professional footballer away at a nice Conference ground.”

Cockfosters were beaten on the opening day of the Spartan South Midlands Premier League season on Saturday 5-1 by Biggleswade United.
