Newmarket Swimming Club hold their own against some of the biggest clubs in the area

Up against some of the biggest clubs in the area, Newmarket Swimming Club finished in an impressive third place at the recent West Suffolk-hosted A’May’zing Spring Development Meet.

On the opening day, Newmarket’s team of 40 swimmers combined to set 50 new personal best times alongside winning 10 gold medals, 12 silver medals and nine bronze medals.

And the squad was even more prolific on the second day of competition thanks to their return of 73 PBs, 11 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 9 bronze medals.

That was enough to secure a total of 2,679 points and third position behind winners West Suffolk Swimming Club and the City of Cambridge.

On an individual basis, nine-year-old Erin Barber was the top performer from the Newmarket club with her return of 134 points.

* Newmarket’s nine swimmers performed well at this month’s Youth Regional Championships in Luton, with the highlight being provided by Ignacio Larghero.

He won a gold medal and the regional title in the 50m freestyle event with a finishing time of 23.97 seconds, which was also a new Suffolk county record.

As a team the Newmarket swimmers came away with a total of 17 PBs and eight club records.
