Newmarket Rugby Club looking to secure promotion this season

Newmarket Rugby Club head coach Martyn Wall has revealed that promotion is the aim during the upcoming 2019/20 campaign.

Last summer Wall inherited a side that had been relegated at the end of a tough 2017/18 season, but they enjoyed a much more productive time of things last term.

After winning the first phase of the Eastern Counties 1 West, they went on to finish third in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield, only just missing out on a promotion place.

Wall feels that not going up on that occasion was a blessing in disguise, but this time around he is eyeing progression to a higher level.

“We won the first phase and came close in the second so it was a really positive season,” he said.

“Last season was all about building some momentum and getting back to enjoying our rugby, which I think we did.

“We achieved some really good stuff over the whole year and ended up with a winning ratio of around 76 per cent.

“That has formed a real strong bond between the players and the team spirit is great.

“Training has been great over the summer and we have some really strong numbers turning up each week.

“We came close to promotion last year but that would have been too early – another year at this level will do us some good.

“But this season we want to be completing the promotion push – that is the aim.”

Wall’s belief in the squad at his disposal is highlighted by the fact that just two players have been recruited over the summer – fly-half Freddie McKibbin and scrum half Matt Hunt.

“We built the nucleus of the squad last year and that is still in place so we are strong.

“The two players we have got in our exciting additions and we are always looking for new players, but we are also very happy with what we have available now.”`

Newmarket will begin their season at home on Saturday when Cottenham Renegades will be their visitors (3pm).
