Newmarket Rugby Club record comfortable over victory over Colchester Rugby Club III
Following last weekend’s draw, Newmarket picked up their first win of the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield with a resounding 27-0 home triumph at the expense of Colchester III.
The game was just three minutes old when Tom Clifton opened the scoring via a penalty.
Within two minutes Max Bell had dotted down the first try while Joe Shipp soon also crashed over the line, only to have his effort ruled out.
An eventual start to the contest continue when Newmarket’s Tom Woods was sin binned, but the visitors from Essex were unable to take advantage of the situation.
In the last five minutes of the half, Newmarket turned up the pressure as Harry Robbins sprinted down the wing and with some fancy foot action managed to skip through the Colchester defence to put the ball down between the posts, with Tom Clifton converting to open up a 15-point lead at the break.
Bell was sent to the sin bin along with an opposition player during a largely uneventful second half, before Freddie McKibben and Will Hale scored a try apiece – with Clifton converting once – to complete the scoring.
Second-placed Newmarket travel to Sudbury II (4th) on Saturday (2.30pm).
