Keeping it in the family: Newmarket Cricket Club’s Midweek Second XI remarkably made up of Jollands for game against Thurlow & Old Mill Greenians II
Siblings playing in the same team is far from a rare occurrence in cricket. It is also not unheard of for a parent and their child to feature together – or even three generations turning out in the same side.
But an entire team made up from one family – all carrying the same surname – surely that is feat that has never been seen before?
That was, until, Newmarket Cricket Club’s Midweek Second XI took the field last night for an Adams Harrison Midweek Cricket League Division Five encounter against Thurlow & Old Mill Greenians II because from one to 11, each position on the team sheet was filled by a Jolland.
Captained by Jimmy, the team featured his brothers Mark and Nick. Jimmy’s sons Henry, Freddie and George were all included, as were Jack and Archie alongside their father Nick. Ryan, who plays football for Bury Town, is the son of Mark. And there was also Brandon and Daniel, two nephews who completed the line-up of Jollands, the majority of whom live in Wickhambrook. For good measure, Jimmy, Mark and Nick’s father Stephen took on the umpiring duties.
And the family occasion, which was hosted at Newmarket’s base in Dullingham, was capped by a six-wicket triumph.
Jimmy said: “A few of the family play every week but this was the first chance we had for everyone to play so we decided to do it because it’s such a rare opportunity.
“I’ve been running the team for a while and it’s mainly for us that are a little bit past it to play alongside our lads.
“The team is about having fun. We all bowl a couple of overs and we are always changing the batting order up.
“It’s great to get to the play with the whole family and a really special moment for everyone.”
