Newmarket Town squad sticking together for the 2020/21 season
More often than not, the summer months at non-league clubs are busy affairs as far as comings and goings are concerned.
With managers often competing for the same players, the recruitment process can resemble a merry-go-round.
However, at Newmarket Town player-manager Michael Shinn is expecting a largely uneventful off-season after the entirety of the previous campaign’s squad re-committed themselves to the Tristel Stadium for 2020/21.
Defender Jon Carver has been recruited from fellow Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Stanway Rovers and there may be one or two further new arrivals, but aside from that, Shinn is pleased with the options at his disposal.
“It has been a pretty easy summer so far,” said the midfielder.
“Ever since I have been at Newmarket there has been a big turnaround in players, but that is natural because a manager wants to bring in his own characters and own players.
“In my first season we had some great people in the squad but just fell short when it came to challenging at the top end of the table.
“Last year was important because we had already added the likes of Ben Robinson and Lewis Whitehead from Cambridge City, and then managed to bring in the Paterson brothers, Joe Robinson and James Seymour.
“They all helped to move us on and the season was going well before it was stopped.
“Now we want to kick on again. It is really important all the lads are staying. Jon will be a good addition and if we can get one or two more to improve us further, hopefully we can do it.
“It has been nice knowing we do not need to bring in six or seven. We’ve got the right type of people here now, and they’re quality players as well.”
