Nick Pope finalises Burnley switch

Premier League side Burnley have completed the signing of Nick Pope in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £1m.

News of the Clarets’ interest in the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper intensified over the last 24 hours, with reports claiming that Pope had made the trip to Lancashire for a medical and discussions on personal terms.

Now, Burnley have confirmed the former Bury Town player’s arrival on a three-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months.

The Wicken shot-stopper will now battle for the number one shirt with England international Tom Heaton, who has already welcomed the new addition to Turf Moor.

“Tom has had time off due to England duty at the Euros but he spoke to me over the phone,” Pope told Burnley’s official website.

“It was nice to get that sort of welcome and start to get to know the lads before I’ve settled in the building.

“Playing on the last day when the club were already promoted and going for the title I was extremely impressed. They were the best team I played against last season.”

Twenty-four-year-old Pope spent five years on the books of Charlton, during which time he amassed 38 senior appearances.
