Newmarket Joggers pair impress in the Suffolk Schools Cross Country race

Two members of the Newmarket Joggers enjoyed notable success at last Thursday’s Suffolk Schools Cross Country (XC) B race in Woodbridge.

Cerys Bithell (Year 7) and Jake Garratt (Intermediate Boys) both performed well, and in doing so boosted their chances of representing the county at next month’s Anglian XC Championships in Boston, Lincolnshire.

Bithell has automatically qualified for the team after clocking 10 minutes and two seconds over the 2K route to finish third of 52 in her age group while Garratt came home 12th of 51 in the 5K, with the top 20 being considered for a place.

And Bithell continued that positive form in the Newmarket Great Run Local (2.5K) on Sunday, finishing in a time of 11:17 to register a commanding victory.

The club’s nine-year-old Lilly Basing also impressed while attempting the 5K distance for the first time, finishing in a time of 30:45.

At a more senior level, Hannah Parsons was the quickest of the female Joggers to complete the recent 5K Handicap Race with a finishing time of 21:57.

She was followed home by Emma Newman (22:55) and Megan Beecroft (23:05) while for the men it Chris Gay (17:23), Mark Hayward (17:58) and James Smith (18:08) making up the top three.

Meanwhile, Jackie Henley – with a time of 31:03 – was the first member to finish of 47 runners in on handicap.
