Mildenhall Fen Tigers could return to speedway action this year in National Development League Trophy
Speedway could be back at the Mildenhall Stadium later this year following positive discussions regarding the return of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers.
The future of the club has been shrouded in uncertainty since November 2023 when it was confirmed that the Fen Tigers would be ‘put on ice’ for 2024 while promoter Greg Palmer assessed the options going forward.
And the situation took a further worrying turn following Palmer’s decision to put the club up for sale less than 12 months later, with the Lakenheath-based owner left 'heartbroken’ after he had been unable to secure the necessary funding to take the Fen Tigers into this year’s Cab Direct Championship.
However, with 2025 marking the club’s 50th anniversary, an optimistic update has been provided this evening on the Mildenhall Speedway Club Facebook page.
A steering committee has revealed that following conversations with Spedeworth Motorsports’ managing director Deane Wood, who owns the Mildenhall Stadium, plans are in place for a team to compete in the National Development League Trophy alongside a ‘couple of challenge fixtures’.
A statement from one of the club steering committee members read: “We will be looking for a complete community effort with everyone pulling together if we are going to pull this off, and we want to enter the NDL National Trophy along with a couple of challenges with other NDL teams as we do not want to run before we can walk. An approach about entering a national competition has been made to the relevant authorities.
“I cannot tell you how excited we are by this turn of events as most people were contemplating the end of the fen tigers, and I sincerely hope this excitement is reflected amongst the Mildenhall Speedway supporters.”
Further details will be revealed at a public meeting held at West Row Village Hall on Sunday, February 2 (3pm).
