ROYAL ASCOT RESULT: Galileo Gold wins St James’ Palace Stakes
Newmarket trainer Hugo Palmer was celebrating his first ever winner at Royal Ascot this afternoon as Galileo Gold triumphed in the St James’ Palace Stakes.
Despite going into the race as the 2000 Guineas champion, the bookmakers regarded the three-year-old as a 6-1 shot to win the showpiece race of the opening day at the Berkshire festival.
However, with Frankie Dettori on board, the colt made a mockery of those odds by hitting the front with just over two lengths remaining and although a late challenge was provided by favourite The Gurkha and Awtaad, there was too much ground left to make up.
“Everything fell into place. He is a great horse and there was nowhere to hide today,” Dettori, who has now mounted 53 winners at Ascot, told Channel 4.
Meanwhile, the Charlie Appleby-trained Emotionless got out poorly and never recovered to make a serious push.
