Newmarket-based Links Golf Club awarded SafeGolf accreditation

The Links Golf Club has this week been celebrating the award of SafeGolf accreditation.

Safeguarding and welfare for the juniors has been a priority of junior organiser and coach Jonny Sharkey and all members at the club. And with that in mind, the club started the process of achieving SafeGolf accreditation in February 2020.

SafeGolf is a partnership of UK golf bodies committed to promoting a safe and positive environment for all those participating, working and volunteering in the sport of golf.

The SafeGolf partnership consists of members from the golfing bodies across Great Britain & Ireland and has been established to help golf respond to the issue of child protection in sport.

Its mission is to safeguard the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk, in the sport of golf.

From 2021 it will be a requirement for all golf clubs to hold the SafeGolf accreditation, but Links Golf Club wanted to be on the front foot in this regard. Over the past six months a lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes to ensure that every category within the guidance was not just met but exceeded.

Following the submission of evidence in the middle of June, Links GC have now been awarded this accreditation, making them one of just 90 clubs in England.

Club chairman, Phil Neal, said “The Links is a great club. It’s very friendly, welcoming and forward-thinking.

"This award helps us to spread that message and to tell people that children are safe and secure here and that we understand about beginner golfers.”
