Sayers to receive Olympic medal
After years of waiting, Newmarket-born Goldie Sayers is set to finally receive her 2008 Olympic javelin bronze medal.
In setting a new British record of 65.75m, 36-year-old Sayers initially finished fourth in the Bird’s Nest Arena in Beijing, though she almost instantly suspected foul play.
Those doubts were ratified in 2016 when retesting of anti-doping samples uncovered a violation for Russia’s Mariya Abakumova, the silver medallist.
Sayers was informed of her elevation on to the podium while driving down the M11 to meet her mother Liz, former Newmarket Journal editor.
But that delight soon gave way to anger and frustration, with Abakumova appealing the decision and the reallocation of medals subsequently delayed.
However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has today dismissed Abakumova's case, meaning the now retired Sayers will get her hands on a first major medal.
