Sayers misses out on Olympic spot
There will be no fourth Olympic Games appearance for Goldie Sayers after she was left out of the Team GB squad for Rio 2016, which gets underway next month.
Newmarket-born Sayers has been Britain’s leading light in the women’s javelin for a number of years.
However, the 33-year-old failed to make the qualifying distance required for automatic Olympic selection at the recent British Championships and the European Championships.
It left Sayers requiring a reprieve from the selection committee, but that has not been granted.
“Sadly I won’t be representing @TeamGB at my 4th Olympics but I will be supporting friends/team-mates perform on the greatest stage of all,” she tweeted this afternoon.
In fact, Britain will not have a male or female javelin representative in Brazil.
