Newmarket Rugby Club going in search of a bonus point in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield this weekend
Newmarket Rugby Club’s head coach Martyn Wall has set his team the target of securing their first bonus point of the season’s second phase when they host Colchester III on Saturday (3pm).
The Scaltback side have made a relatively positive start to life in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One Shield, sitting third in the table after two victories and a defeat.
However, they remain the only club of six in the division to have not picked up a bonus point – something Wall wants to see put right this weekend.
“It looked like we were going to get a bonus point when we played Colchester a couple of weeks ago. All the momentum was with us but the referee got injured and the match ended early,” said Wall.
“We are the only side without a bonus point, either in defeat or for four tries, and that is something we want to change because they can make a difference to where you finish at the end of the season.
“We are looking for the bonus-point win this weekend. We are back at home in front of our fans and hopefully we can get a big win.”
Newmarket still have a chance of clinching the title and promotion, although that would mean bridging an eight-point gap to league-leading Beccles with four matches left to play.
Nevertheless, Wall has revealed that elevation to a higher level is not the team’s major objective this term, particularly after a difficult 2017/18 campaign.
“We are still a team in transition and promotion probably would not be the best thing, though we still want to finish as high as possible,” added Wall.
“It has been a rebuilding job and trying regalvanize the squad because it had been a tough year.
“We have managed to rebuild the team spirit, which will hold us in good stead next season.”
